The Flaming Lips – My Own Planet (1985)


An erratic, underdeveloped debut, the five-track Flaming Lips nonetheless succeeds on the strength of its ingenuity, wit, and bracing dementia. Even from the outset, the group sounds quite like no one else: “My Own Planet” is a rallying cry of alienation and independence while “Bag Full of Thoughts” and “Garden of Eyes/Forever Is a Long Time” are idiot-savant gems.
