Alva Noto – Uni Blue (2018)

“Expansive and incredibly tense, our premiere ‘Uni Blue‘ plunges its listener in a smouldering magnetic field where static-filled riffs and thunderous echoes abruptly collide. As the spectrum covered seems to stretch beyond all graspable measure, Nicolai steadily builds up a dramatic narrative by way of what one could call a sonic chiaroscuro – merging roaring sub-octave chords with beaming modular patterns as playful chimes and bleeps grant you a one-way ticket to Utopia. A deep inward trip expressed across a sharp-crested sound design of which Nicolai holds the secret, ‘Uni Blue‘ shines high up in the sky and way above the competition. That’s genius right there.” Source

Peter Cat Recording Co – Love Demons (2018 Version)

“A cat may have nine lives, but Peter Cat Recording Co. has a multitude of dimensions. Formed in New Delhi around 2010 by the crooner Suryakant Sawhney, it’s a group that’s mutated over time, shedding members and accruing more, always evolving musically with each album: from gypsy jazz to psychedelic cabaret; ballroom waltzes to epic space disco; bossa supernova to uneasy listening. What’s more they play jajj, which you’ve almost certainly never heard of.”Bandcamp

Peter Zummo – Song II: Right; Off The Beat (2018)

“A few years ago, American composer and trombonist PETER ZUMMO discovered a 1984 recording of unreleased material from his Six Songs suite in his archive. Six Songs was the basis for LATERAL PASS (Foom 2014), his award winning score for modern-dance choreographer Trisha Brown’s work of the same name. Material taken from Six Songs can also be heard on his seminal ZUMMO WITH AN X (Loris Bend, 1985/Optimo 2012).

The work is now being released as a new LP, FRAME LOOP. Recorded live and in single takes, it features a stellar line-up of longtime ZUMMO collaborators: ARTHUR RUSSELL on amplified cello, BILL RUYLE on marimba, and MUSTAFA AHMED on congas. ZUMMO plays trombone and euphonium.” Bandcamp

Groeni – The Pharmacist (2018)

Taken from the 2018 album “Nihx”

“Created at the footstep of Mount Victoria, Groeni wanted to challenge themselves compositionally and sonically with Nihx. Nihx explores the characteristics of points of conflict between opposing forces. As in the past, and as with many electronic outfits, the music had been written ‘in the box’, so to speak. To counter this technique the three members of Groeni (Al, Mike, and James) each wrote numerous compositional sketches that were more or less complete as frameworks before entering them into the digital realm.”Bandcamp

Sons Of Kemet – My Queen Is Harriet Tubman (2018)

Taken from the 2018 album “Your Queen Is A Reptile”

“It is appropriate that this, British-based Sons of Kemet’s third album, should be released under the Impulse banner. During its heyday, Impulse was the home of John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders and as such was the chief platform for the cosmic/spiritual jazz movement of the 1960s and 1970s and that movement’s demand for white-majority society’s recognition of black culture and respect for black people.” Source

Earl Hooker – Bertha (1967)

“This rare circa-1967 album has what you’d expect from a vintage Earl Hooker LP: blues instrumentals with unfailingly stinging guitar, a relaxed groove, and soul-tinged arrangements bolstered by solid organ.(…)But for the most part the program is original, including one number, “Bertha,” that seems to look toward Santo & Johnny’s sleepy slide guitar workouts for inspiration.” Source
